Digital Journalism: A New Revelation
With technology’s continued advancement in modern times, journalism has also taken a step forward into the digital world. This forms a question in my mind: What is the significance of this milestone in today’s world?
At the press conference held on September 11, 2026, at STEFTI, speaker Ahlette C. Reyes explained how we benefit from the implementation of the internet in journalism and what has caused it to become so appealing to people compared to traditional journalism. I found the discussion overall to be very meaningful, and it truly gave me a new perspective on digital journalism.
The opening statement was, “Digital journalism goes beyond posting online, it combines every kind of journalism and stories accompanied by photos and videos.” In my opinion, this was a very powerful opening to Ma’am Reyes’ discussion, as its meaning expresses that digital journalism still follows the same principles as traditional journalism when it comes to the innovative ideas and inspiration that journalism as a whole is able to bring to its audience.
From my observations, I’ve noticed how newspapers and radio have slowly drifted away from common usage, and the press conference helped me piece together just why that is.
As the speaker emphasized, “People often just find news within a single scroll on their gadgets.” This simple statement basically summarizes why people have shifted toward digital journalism these days. For instance, I personally relate to this since I would rather read about recent news online with just a few taps on my screen rather than have to buy a newspaper or listen to a radio station. This also shows how digital journalism can be cost-effective. It can reduce the amount of paper used and, in turn, help lessen the need for cutting down trees.
Furthermore, digital journalism allows audiences like me to become part of the news process since we can interact with it through comments and even reactions. Another point the speaker mentioned was that it does not have to be limited geographically, meaning news posted online can reach readers from all around the world. Additionally, online articles can be edited at any given time, meaning they are not permanently fixed once published.
With all of these points, the speaker shared her last few inspiring words to conclude the press conference: “What’s more important is that despite the benefits that digital journalism brings, the principles of journalism stays the same.” These words, in my perspective, express that journalism can have many forms, but it will always have the same spark no matter what. We should be open to the concept of digital journalism and welcome it as journalism continues to adapt to the modern world.
